Celebrating July

Roger and I celebrated the 4th at home this year with a brunch of red, white and blue homemade waffles and trimmings. . .

. . . and an early dinner of Longhorn Steakhouse ribs. Excellent ribs!

Roger's pickle ball crew had a little early morning treats party. He plays with lots of fun friends on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings each week. Wish my knees (well actually, also my back, balance, etc.) would let me play!

On July 8, it was off to Jerry's Bell Cross Dude Ranch in Cascade, Montana, for the annual Class of '62 Gathering/Reunion of buddies and spouses. Roger looks forward to it every year, and, though I don't do the cowboy stuff much anymore, I genuinely love his class friends and their spouses. They are such great people, so down to earth and fun.

This is the scene from the front of the ranch house.

We arrived Wednesday evening in time for dinner, prepared by the full-time cook and staff.

Next morning, Roger got to do, probably, his favorite thing they do at the ranch, shoot skeet. I have to say, he is very, very good at it! It's a sport where quick reflexes are key, and those, he's still got big time!

Someone passed out little packs of peanuts to have with or put in our cokes, like they used to do in the day!

One of the activities was a corn-hole tournament. Couples' names were listed on a chart in single elimination competition. I had never played before, but my partner, Roger, is very good (Drats!). I started getting the hang of it in our first competition, which we won. Then, back-to back, we played our second game, and we won that, which placed us in the final competition, playing for the championship. As it turned out, it was one of Roger's best friends, Danny, and Roger's old girlfriend, Carol (who was playing for Danny's wife, who is on oxygen), who were our competitors! We were ahead 19-17, but then Roger put the beanbag in the hole, which is worth 3 points, when he was aiming to put it on the board, which is worth 1 point. That put us over 21, which is the winning number. So you have to go back to 17, and Danny and Carol ended up winning. By then, 3 games in a row, I was tired. I have to say, I'm not very competitive and I just wanted to sit down.

You know that you're really out in nature when you have a visitor like this!

Jerry announced that there would be a 2-hour ATV ride. Now I know Jerry's time clock after I've had a few visits to the ranch, so I opted out. They returned almost 4 hours later.

Taking a break

Such a wonderful group!

They traveled to the meadow, where we have usually had lunch, but they didn't this year, because we had 2 meals each day this year, brunch and dinner, instead of the usual 3. There's an old cabin and pretty view of the surrounding mountains.

Next day was the trail horse ride, and the participants of that have narrowed down to 7 this year, and that's counting the staff cowboy who led the way. Everyone now needs a stool to help them get on and off the horse, except Roger. He hoists himself on and off with no problem. He got a lot of teasing for that!

Roger took me on a fun ATV ride all around the property in 1 of the 2 air-conditioned ones. Now, that was fun!

We visited Danny and Lyle fishing in the pond they stock with fish.

This is a working ranch, too, and they have about 150 head of cattle and about half a dozen are longhorns.

Some of us went to the barn where they're feeding a baby fawn who was abandoned by its mother.

We posed for a pic in front of the fireplace on the final night before dinner.

Roger's "Wilson Boy" buddy, Danny Gibson

Danny and his cute wife, Carol - the long and short of it!

Dinner the final night is always on the patio, and a country and western band come to the ranch to entertain us. We had delicious filet mignon steaks with all of the trimmings.

It was Joan Heaps' birthday and we all sang to her. She's such a lovely, gracious lady!

Not a lot happened in July. I mostly stay in the AC. We've started working on our final combined personal history, searching for and sorting pics from the past on our computer.

Susi Lafaele, my "boss" at the Chamber of Commerce, where I volunteered for over 8 years, sent a text to me and 2 other long-term volunteers with this pic from the past, saying that she missed us and wanted us to go to lunch together.

So here's our updated pic. It was so fun to reconnect. Susi's a real doll! She left the chamber a few years ago and is now in charge of the Washington County Fair, where she has made big improvements. I think the best change is getting it moved from August to April. So much better in this hot desert climate!

I had to include this cute pic of Rick, Jodie, Abby and Blake at Disneyland. Rick is such a good sport to take them there every year, and Blake was a real daredevil this year, going on every ride with Abby, home from her mission. He loved it this year!

On Pioneer Day, the 24th of July, we stayed home in the cool house and I made Roger's favorite, Sloppy Joes and potato salad and Key lime bars. We watched the parade in Salt Lake on tv and saw some fireworks out our window that night.

Roger has finished out the month taking advantage of the summer deal at Copper Rock Golf Course. He's gone 3 times with different foursomes. He says it is very challenging, and he shot 3 over on the back nine, 39, the last time he went and was so happy!

We enjoyed our celebrations this month. I am celebrating that hot, hot July is over!

June Jaunts (I know, cheesy)

Three of the four weekends in June, we were headed Up North. I think it's great that society gathers and celebrates when we enter this world and when we leave it. June this year had some of each for us.
The first weekend in June, we drove to Rick's for a baby shower for our granddaughter, Anna ( son, Ryan, and wife, Emily's oldest daughter).

We took pics of Rick and Jodies lovely home and adjoining pool house next door. That pool house has come in handy for Rick's two oldest kids - Josh, Jaylene and their 2 littles lived there before they left for Cornell, where Josh is getting his MBA, and a week later, Sadie and Joe moved in and now live there with their new little Ellie, saving money to get into a new home.

Jodie and Rick always plant such beautiful flowers.

We arrived in time for a little farewell swimming party for Josh, Jaylene and kids. They came home to Utah for about a month, and are now back at Cornell, where Josh is working on a project with one of his  professors.

Everyone loves their hot tub!

Blake loves to swim in the pool, especially when he's surrounded by loved ones!

Next evening, Aunt Jodie hosted a wonderful shower for Anna. The food was so delicious and the flowers, so pretty. Here is Anna with her darling mother-in-law. We had the shower early - Anna isn't due until late October - because her inlaws were leaving to be mission leaders in Vancouver, Canada, the next week.

Anna's mom, Emily, and sister, Sarah, were in Utah for the shower, and also, Anna's Grandma, Sue, who all live in Arizona.

When we took these pics, most of the Vincents had already left. Roger's sisters, Chyrrl, and Sue, came and supported our family, as always. Our kids love them so much!

Blake really loves his cousin, Sarah, and she is always so excited to see him and so cute with him!
.

We were happy that we were Up North when they held our dear friend's funeral, Pat McEntire. When we lived in Roy in the 1970s and part of the 1980s, her husband, Glen, was the bishop of our ward and Roger worked closely with him. Such a loving, wonderful man! And we loved his dear wife, Pat! Every Sunday our then little toddler, Stacy, sat on her lap in Sacrament meeting. They adored each other! I worked with Pat in the Junior Sunday school - she was co-ordinator and I was the chorister, and that might have been my favorite calling in the church I have ever had! I Loved teaching songs to those little kids, and Pat adored the kids, too - we worked so well together. Such happy memories! This pic does not do her justice - she was a beautiful woman, so charming and lady-like and fun!

In the next week, Roger traveled to Mesquite, Nevada, with 3 friends to golf at the Wolf Creek Golf Course. He said it was lots of up and down walking and very hot, but, as always, he really enjoyed it. Extreme heat doesn't bother him, but he hates to play in really cold wind and rain.

The toughest thing about turning 80 is having to say good-bye to so many dear friends! When we lived in Ogden, one of our dearest friend couples were Dave and Jan. They both performed with the predecessors to the BYU Young Ambassadors when they were at BYU and they both sang in the, at that time, Mormon Tabernacle Choir. So we have music in common, and we were in a small dinner group with them. Their jobs took them to Germany, and we visited them twice over there. They have lived in Texas a few years and they have stayed with us in St. George. We have met for lunch in SLC, when we were both in town, with our dear friend, Karleen, many times. We all loved each other for many years. Dave hasn't been in good health but has soldiered through for a long time. Oh, how we'll miss this darling man and his wonderful sense of humor!

The graveside service was lovely and heartfelt, complete with the tunes from this bagpiper.
The luncheon afterwards was so fun, wish we had taken pics, and we got to catch up with Jan and visit with some other dear friends from Ogden. They had HugHes cater the food, and it was so delicious! We were entertained by their talented family and we even had a sing-a-long.

The following weekend, we were Up North again for Ellie's baby blessing. She is our 7th great-grandchild. It had also been Blake's birthday, and he loved his llama cuddly blanket.

Sadie and Joe were able to have the baby blessing Sunday evening in their home so all of the family travelers could be there. Sadie is such a loving, conscientious mom!

Josh and family flew back to Cornell the next morning.

I got to hold this sweet little thing a few minutes before we changed clothes and left to drive back to St. George.

Bye bye, cute family, for a few months!

Our Come Follow Me group has become very close over the past almost 6 years. Changes have happened amongst us in that period. Carl and Marie had to take a health break and we now have Loran and Nancy with us. Our dear Mary's Alzheimer's has been rapidly increasing and we are so grateful to still have Loran after his second heart attack while playing pickle ball, which I talked about last month. Bob and Diane weren't able to come to our party because Bob's back was hurting him too much. Probably the most-quoted sentence for us in this phase of life is, "Getting old isn't for sissies!" I remember when my dad said that and it seemed so far away for me. We're there! Relationships take on greater value. This little group is important in all of our lives and we truly love each other.

We met for dinner at, Benja's Thai, then went to our house for dessert and games.

I made a hack on the popular-in-the-media, Dubai chocolate, with this chocolate pistachio crunch cake. We all thought it was delicious!

We played a couple of different games, one that shared things from each of our lives, and a fun card game. What a great evening it was!

Well, as I said in the tittle of this post, we took off on a lot of jaunts in June and were on the road way more than I'd really choose to be, but each event was too important to miss. Such is life in the fast lane, right? I'm kind of hoping to slide over to the slow lane for awhile, except I really hate to get behind those darned trucks!
